Dean Bank House Exterior

Georgian Villa, Edinburgh New Town

A charming listed building with an elegant garden extension

Our alterations to this wonderfully picturesque detached Georgian villa have transformed what was an awkward historic arrangement in need of extensive renovation into a beautiful home. The unique character of the house has been carefully preserved with restoration of principal rooms and existing decorative features, which have been further enhanced by select new  interventions. The new garden extension with glazed sliding screens provides a direct and more immediate relationship with the extensive gardens. The contemporary character of this new kitchen/ living space provides a wonderful contrast to the more formal traditional rooms becoming the focal point of family life. An underused shady exterior courtyard was transformed into a new light-filled studio space and hall providing both additional footprint area and improved connections between existing rooms. The courtyard stone wall was retained and the space
enclosed with a large structural glass roof with subtle detailing and a low visual impact on the historic context. Fine and durable materials appropriate to the architectural quality and setting of the existing house have been used, such as natural sandstone, contemporary minimal steel glazing and a traditionally detailed lead roofing. Our sensitive interventions have made this fine building suitable for contemporary living, thereby ensuring the long term future of this charming listed property, as well as providing a fabulous family home for our wonderful clients!

“Our priority for the design was to retain as much of the original character as possible whilst creating a contemporary, efficient and comfortable family home. Working closely with Linda, Lorn and the team from day one we explored a number of design options to achieve our vision. We were expertly guided through the design, planning and construction processes in a very professional but friendly way. We feel very fortunate to have built a close relationship with a first-class team who have extensive experience with this kind of property and the nuanced requirements of a sensitive project. Thank you again to all involved for such a wonderful outcome – 5 stars.”
